Mathematical Reasoning for JEE Main: Syllabus Status & Quick Notes

Is Mathematical Reasoning still in the JEE Main syllabus? What the NTA syllabus reduction changed, plus quick revision notes on statements, truth tables, converse, inverse and contrapositive.

Is Mathematical Reasoning in the JEE Main Syllabus?

No — Mathematical Reasoning was removed from the JEE Main mathematics syllabus in the NTA syllabus rationalisation announced for JEE Main 2024, and it has stayed out since. If you are preparing for JEE Main 2026 or 2027, you do not need this chapter for the exam.

It still appears in some state and board exams and in older JEE papers, so a quick conceptual summary is below — useful if your board tests it or you're solving pre-2024 papers.

Quick Revision Notes (for Boards & Old PYQs)

Statements and Connectives

  • A statement is a sentence that is definitively true or false. Compound statements join simple ones with AND (∧), OR (∨), NOT (~).
  • Conditional: p → q ('if p then q'). Biconditional: p ↔ q ('p if and only if q').
  • p → q is false only when p is true and q is false — the single most-tested fact.

Converse, Inverse, Contrapositive

FormStatementEquivalent to p → q?
Converseq → pNo
Inverse~p → ~qNo
Contrapositive~q → ~pYes

Negations Worth Memorising

  • ~(p ∧ q) = ~p ∨ ~q and ~(p ∨ q) = ~p ∧ ~q (De Morgan's laws).
  • ~(p → q) = p ∧ ~q.
  • Negation of 'for all x, P(x)' is 'there exists x such that ~P(x)', and vice versa.
